Methodology & Caveats

Data Source

Buyback and issuance amounts are extracted from the SEC's XBRL companyfacts API — the structured financial data that public companies file as part of their 10-Q (quarterly) and 10-K (annual) submissions. We use the cash-flow-statement tags as the primary signal: PaymentsForRepurchaseOfCommonStock for share repurchases and ProceedsFromIssuanceOfCommonStock for new share issuance, both in USD.

Single-Quarter vs. YTD Records

SEC XBRL filings emit cumulative year-to-date values alongside the single-quarter ones. A Q3 10-Q reports both the Q3-only amount (~90 days) AND the 9-month YTD amount (~270 days). To avoid double-counting, we filter to single-quarter records (75-100 day period length) for the "Quarter" view and ~12-month records (350-380 day period length) for the "Annual" view. No naive trailing-twelve-month summation is computed — the Annual column shows the actual fiscal-year value as reported in the most recent 10-K.

Limitations
  • Buyback authorizations are not buybacks. Companies announce buyback programs (e.g. "$50B authorized") in 8-K filings without committing to execute the full amount. This page only shows actually-executed repurchases from cash flow statements.
  • Treasury stock vs. retirement. Some companies hold repurchased shares in treasury; others retire them. We aggregate both via the cash-flow tag.
  • Issuance includes secondaries, ATM, and SPAC raises. ProceedsFromIssuanceOfCommonStock doesn't separate planned dilutive offerings from neutral primary issuance.
  • Stock-based compensation (RSU vesting, ESPP) is generally a separate XBRL tag and is not included here; treat issuance numbers as headline-level only.
Update Schedule

Updated daily after market close as part of the SEC EDGAR processing pipeline. Latest data reflects the most recent 10-Q / 10-K filings ingested by the SEC EDGAR full-text search; expect ~24-48 hour lag after a company files.
